Introduction to Modern Manufacturing

Every year the first Friday in October celebrates National Manufacturing Day. In fact, the entire month offers opportunities to explore, learn and appreciate our manufacturing heroes across the USA.

The holiday is spearheaded by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and seeks to uncover the daily workings of thousands of manufacturing companies. The day showcases local manufacturing events, job fairs, and in person events to promote manufacturers and inspire the next generation of students and employees.

During these manufacturing events, Manufacturers often highlight new technologies and innovation for the curious-minded individuals that participate. Collectively, these initiatives support the advancement of the manufacturing industry and inspire the future workforce to consider a career in the country’s vibrant manufacturing industry.

When is National Manufacturing Day?

National Manufacturing Day is held every year on the first Friday in October to commemorate the manufacturing industry's skilled workers in America.

How and Why Did National Manufacturing Day Begin?

The United States highly prizes new product development and technological advances. The manufacturing industry makes these ideals a reality. National Manufacturing Day was founded primarily to educate the American people on the power of American manufacturing and celebrate our manufacturing success. The events of Manufacturing Day also serve to inspire the next generation of manufacturing workers. This is why Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) first began.

To understand the day itself, it’s helpful to look back at manufacturing history, and how it transformed America.

Manufacturing Industry Timeline from the 1800s to Present:

·       1800s – The Industrial Revolution turned the world upside down. The modern manufacturing industry was born.

·       1900s – Factories spread across the country, furthering the landscape of mass production and supply.

·       2000s – United States exports skyrocket by 340%.

·       2020s – Manufacturing workers are in high demand. According to The Manufacturing Institute, the manufacturing world will provide “4 million high-skill, high-tech and high-paying jobs over the next decade.”1

Manufacturing Day displays American resilience in the manufacturing landscape over the decades—most notably in recent pandemic history. MFG Day also seeks to inform Americans about the resources, skills, services, and developing technologies of manufacturers.

Recruiting the next generation is a collective challenge for manufacturers. Manufacturing Day encourages future workers to participate and support American manufacturing careers. MFG Day gets students involved and excited about new technologies, industry ideas, and business opportunities in the manufacturing sector. MFG Day also displays the inner workings of manufacturing plants to inspire the next generation to be a part of this vital industry.

What Activities Take Place on Manufacturing Day/Month?

Not just the day, but the whole month has become a manufacturing celebration. October has arisen as a celebration of technology and machines, and the brilliant people behind them. Schools, educational centers, and manufacturing plants across the USA perform events to showcase their manufacturing prowess. Americans intrigued by industrial facilities and robotics flock to these events every year.

Events held during Manufacturing Month have grown from hundreds to thousands in the last decade. And jobs keep exploding along with America’s manufacturing growth. National Today predicts that “by 2030, the manufacturing sector will generate four million jobs that would need to be filled.”2  Manufacturing keeps giving back.

Another incentive? Every $1 invested in manufacturing generates $2.79 for the economy. The best return on investment for any industry.3

American Biotech Supply’s Manufacturing Heroes

Manufacturers all over the world adapted to fit the pandemic’s demands. Many workers not only survived the threats, but thrived in the face of them.

The production teams at American Biotech Supply did exactly this. In the face of unprecedented times, ABS employees overcame setbacks and produced record-breaking years of production at the height of the pandemic.

We want to acknowledge the heroes behind the scenes that no one else sees. The faithful, unsung workers who screw, cut, wire, assemble, paint, and produce products that better people’s lives around the world. For all the work we see and don’t see, we want to say thank you to these men and women.

We owe you our respect and our thanks.

Happy Manufacturing Day to all.
